Color Case Hardening

Double H Gunsmithing color case hardens receivers and furniture irons at our shop in Blanch, North Carolina. Ken Barfield restores the mottled color and hardened skin that many classic American doubles and period guns were built with.

What we color case

Barrels are finished with our rebluing processes when a traditional blue is the right look. Color case hardening pairs well with rust blue on soldered doubles, wood refinish, and related restoration work.

How the work is done

We polish in the shop, anneal as needed, pack the parts in a carburizing medium, and quench for color and case. Colors are mottled and vary from heat to heat. That variation is part of the traditional look.

Optional Cerakote clear over the finished color is available as a wear coat. Reassembly can be included when the complete firearm is here, or we can return receivers and irons for you or another shop to finish assembling.

Bring parts disassembled when you can, and include the screws and small irons that should share the same heat so the color lot matches.

Pricing

That starting figure covers a typical receiver job with shop polish and the tear-down and reassembly needed when the complete firearm is in the shop. Extra prep and larger restorations are quoted separately. Figures are pre-tax and already reflect the four-percent cash discount in our usual practice.
